Newsweek's Steven Levy on MacBook Air: Sleek but "Circumcision" Cuts its Functionality

I visited Steven Levy at his Newsweek office in midtown Manhattan today to get the lowdown on the new MacBook Air. Steven has one of a handful of review units provided to big foot tech journalists. * Steven gave the new computer a mixed review on newsweek.com and in the Washington Post, which has just started to publish his articles. He has a really funny metaphor in the review, something about circumcision technique -- and that too much was cut (so to speak) from the computer by the designers.

While its incredibly thin and light, it has no DVD drive and very few ports, he explains in this segment.

More Air Reviews: Ryan Block at Engadget has just posted an extensive and mostly positive review. MacUser takes issue with the inability to watch a DVD.

Newsweek_logo I was at Newsweek to report on the publications' greatly expanded video operations. One of the new shows features Steven is User Notes. Here's his video review of the MacBook Air.

Lots more about Newsweek and video in the days ahead.

  • Macbook Air giveaway at Macbook7. com. It's your lucky day! wonderful video...

  • typical mac snob..you sir..are an asshole.

  • Buy refurb for $1000 from apple and you got a good tool for a great price. I also have a 13" Macbook Pro and they all have their purpose.

Until you own one you recall have no idea what you are talking about...and I'm guessing you wouldn't be here reading these posts unless you had interest!

Some got bad ones and my rocks...everyone I know who sees it wants one!

  • loool, you wasted your cash on this hunk of junk and now you are trying desperately to try and justify it ! haaaahaaa

  • Why would you pay so much for this junk? The specs for macbook air suck! You are basically sacrificing specs for portability and looks.

  • ( part 2 ) if you like UNIX like operating system USE Linux on pc.I would say Ubuntu.Or even you can use MAC operating system on pc OSx86 Project InsanelyMac. So,again why use MAC ? and sepdn that much money ? Maybe it is becasue of its look ! why not using Voodoo Envy 133 laptops ? I would say IT WILL SMASH the look of any apple out there. So , again, I do not see any reason why we should spend that much money on mac.

  • My eyeglass is lighter than this but I have to change the lense casue I

cannot see. what is point of having something VERY light

when it is IN fact not able to do MOST ? With that price I got Sager NP 5797

with Geforce Graphic card GTXM on it with almost eny ports you need, Quad

processor. so why use this mac for ? Is it becasue the operating system is good and not crash so much ? So called Unix like operating system ?

  • OK enough with the bitching about the connections.

    1. Who cares if it has one USB port. If you are using more then one item chances are you are at your desk, use a freak'n USB hub!

    2. Remote disc works great you just have to wireless N on your router too to take advantage of it its success. To many people bitch about it running on G.

    3. Hard drive to small, again do you really need the big hard drive on the road? Have your itunes on your time machine at home.

My is my desktop and it works.
