Rant about how America uses its hegemonic power to be completely hypocritical. Supporting free trade overseas, but not practicing it at home.

  • This is largely my point. Free trade cannot be coordinated by a business-government coalition. They will inevitably end up with skewed, unfair rules. True free trade is about individuals and corporations making their own choices without government interference that favors one over the other.

  • "...one cannot simply look to history and conclude that two-sided free trade will not benefit all." And yet, it is history that teaches us the most valuable of lessons. Economics is a social science; its basic principles are unyielding, scalable. You seem to forget that we are talking about power. There is no self-interest to be gained by giving your competitor more power. Asking capitalists to throw themselves behind policies forcing them to compete is like asking lions to eat grass.

  • If individual capitalists or firms have the power to stop competition, I agree that they will do so, and often have. However, they do not naturally have this power. They only attain it through big government. If business could not hijack government free trade would work much better.

Free trade may harm some individual capitalists (those that are inefficient), but on aggregate it greatly helps society as a whole by lowering prices for consumers worldwide.

  • Furthermore, subsidies such as these solve the problems of overproduction. They allow us to export cheap goods. These exports limit domestic supply and stabilize prices - which is econo-speak for hedging against price deflation. Consider all the food exports we call humanitarian aid. Not that this is bad, per se. I'm not defending these actions, but I am pointing out that neoliberal trade is not what its advertised as. Nor is it healthy for any economy.

  • Furthermore, subsidies do not solve problems of overproduction - they produce overproduction. Agricultural dumping (exporting cheap goods) occurs because we have too many of the goods in the US because they are so heavily subsidized. It lowers the price of the world market for said good. Since most developing nations export crops they lose money. The money they lose from legitimate sales greatly outnumbers and "humanitarian advantage" from cheaper American crops.

  • I like what you're saying, but the way you presented it was kind of annoying...not to be a YouTube troll...just trying to give some constructive criticism.

  • I'm glad you're angry, given many of your values. But pure free markets and free trade don't work for agricultural commodities, (Google "It's Price Responsiveness" "Daryll E. Ray"). So we'd usually lose money on farm exports, which is bad business practice, but profit for greedy AgBiz. And free trade has devastated LDCs. On trade search IATP publications or Google "Intelligent Talk" "Alternatives to Economic Globalization" for a comprehensive video. & see my videos on this
