In this video New York Habitat (http://www.nyhabitat.com ) continues the series of video tour about Harlem, New York.

Harlem, a historic neighborhood in northern Manhattan, stretches from the East River west to the Hudson River between 155th Street and 110th Street, at the northern boundary of Central Park. Morningside Heights is a small area of a greater Harlem.

Harlem is so large that it contains a number of smaller areas and districts. In order to make it simpler, today I will be showing you one of these, Morningside Heights, which stretches from 110th Street north to 125th Street and from Morningside Avenue all the way west to the Hudson River.

Be sure to check out other video tours by New York Habitat about Harlem such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCS0vGyYo0o or other parts of the city like Times Square in Midtown, Manhattan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWFhe3xXSj0 .

History:
Morningside Heights is known for its many colleges, like Columbia University, the Manhattan School of Music, Barnard College and for its beautiful churches, including the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and Riverside Church.

Cathedral of Saint John the Divine:
The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, designed in 1888, was built to allow all different people and religions around the world to gather to pray, regardless of their country of origin. In fact, it became the house of prayers of New York's religious melting pot.

Tom's Restaurant:
Tom's Restaurant in Morningside Heights is famous for two reasons: 1) it is the title of a song by Suzanne Vega, called Tom's Diner and 2) It appeared in the TV show Seinfeld. Supposedly Jerry and his friends lived around here and they came here to eat Tom's food because it was good and cheap.

Columbia University:
Columbia University is a private and prestigious university with a large campus that occupies 299 acres of land, or about 1.5 square kilometers and has approximately 25,000 students and 3,500 professors. It was founded in 1754 with the name of King's College by King George II of England. It lost its name after the American Revolution and was renamed Columbia University in 1912.
The university owns almost 8,000 apartments in this area for its faculty and students.

  • Just wondering, what's the city or neighborhood just under morningside heights?

  • @18roger23 Hello! Thanks for your interest in our video! The neighborhood below Morningside Heights is the Northern part of the Upper West Side, a nice neighborhood too!

  • Can't wait to go to NY. Keep up the videos and you'll be looking at many potential customers!

  • @Rasterius Thanks a lot for your support, we're very glad you like our video! :)

  • With all due respect, Morningside Heights is NOT part of Harlem, neither today nor historically. In earlier times, the two most thriving (and distinct) communities in northern Manhattan were Manhattanville and Harlem. M'ville was bounded by +/- 122nd (south), 135th (north), the Hudson (west) and St Nicholas Park (east). Harlem was the area to the east of St Nick Park. Modern Morningside Heights overlaps Manhattanville (north) and stretches to about 108th (south) where Bloomingdale begins.

  • @ferguson6552 Thanks a lot for your help! We will take your comment into consideration, it will help us to improve our videos in the future! New York neighborhood boundaries are always hotly debated... even in our office! Thanks again ;)

  • @QUIKKSTAR Hey there! Chicago is a great city, with a beautiful skyline, very nice people and it is very clean, true! We would love to shoot video of the windy city one day!

  • This is a very "confused" video. =p

  • @slicingwater Yes, Barnard College is a great women's Liberal Arts School. Its student population of around 2300 is a great compliment to the huge student community in Morningside Heights, Harlem. And to top it off, their mascot is Millie the dancing Barnard Bear. Go Barnard Blue!

  • Bamard College is apart of Columbia University.
