Hard to believe that Mendelssohn was never satisfied with this piece and never had it published in his lifetime. It couldn't be more perfect.

Mendelssohn is the greatest of the B composers. He never matured from his youth.
The Octet, and his Shakespeare music, and the Violin Concerto are probably his greatest works. His choral music is too under the influence of Bach and Handel to be innovative. And his ideas are never top drawer.

Mendelssohn IMHO, is truly one of the most underrated of the great composers.

Wonderful image and audio quality, in addition to one of masterpieces of Mendelssohn, and the marvelous performance of the Cologne Philarmonic Orchestra. Bravo
