i don't think they try to hide it. In shows or movies they always show the american flag on the background whenever something inspiring is happening, or the term "American" stands for "related to freedom, justice, etc.", to name a few examples.
patriotism isn't that bad, though. it is a social mechanism a culture or nation has to preserve itself. when taken to the extreme however, yes, it's terrible.
