Just me playing Quake 2. Uploaded as a test of my newly bought version of fraps. This is also my favorite game in the world.

Compare this with my Quake 4 gameplay.

Game - Quake 2 by id software
Recorded with Fraps and compressed using VirtualDUB.

Reasons why I love Quake 2:
1) Cartoon graphics and violence (marines falling in meat grinders or gone insane).
2) The music soundtrack.
3) The sound effects (the jump HOOAH! noise, gun fire noises, drowning, getting hurt, death screams, water and lava, ambient/environment sounds, this list could be very long).
4) Swimming.
5) The super powerups Quad Damage, Invulnerability, and Super Health.
6) Flies come to fly around corpses.
7) Gibbing dead bodies.
8) Stroggs will fight each other if they accidentally shoot one another.
9) The lighting engine uses all colors of the rainbow throughout quake 2 which creates very ambient locations.
10) The weapons are creative and amazing. You can easilly shoot any target from any distance.
11) The medkits, armor, armor shards, and ammo are extremely satisfying to pick up.
12) Hand grenades.
13) The enemy stroggs you have to fight.
14) Telepads for telefragging.
15) Coop mode online and LAN through the entire singleplayer.
16) Nonlinear level progression.
17) My favorite weapons are all the weapons because any of them are effective to some degree and have no weird problems.
18) The machinegun constantly makes you aim upwards from recoil.
19) Awesome story and comedy. Game doesn't take itself serious.
20) The interface. When you push escape an easy menu opens right on the game screen which looks and feels amazing.
21) Developer console opens easy with Tilde key.
22) Mushroom cloud explosions.
23) Explosive barrels.
24) Breakable glass and walls.
25) Multiplayer is no different from the singleplayer so there is no learning curve or weird things like bounce platforms.
26) No melee weapons so you do have to aim with your weapon still when up close which means you might kill yourself with rockets or grenades which is more fun.
27) The Strogg aliens sound hilarious when they talk. id software is famous for their enemy talking sounds whenever one spots you.
28) Hundreds if not thousands of mods and crazy quake2 fans.
29) Counterculture dark, dirty, and gritty look to go with its low quality but ground breaking graphics technology for that time in 1998. Some of its graphics still would hold up today.
30) Realistic looking and comedic cinematics at the beginning and ending of the game to show what really happened to your character.
31) Incredible and outstanding memorable levels both in singleplayer and multiplayer.
32) No reload buttons. Just ammo.
33) No proning. Just run, jump, and shoot but you can still hide in shadows.
34) Rocket jumping.
35) Awesome looking particle effects system.
36) Bosses in this game rock.
37) Hilarious death and idle animations!
38) You can sneak up behind strogg so there are some stealth elements.
39) You can see your own blood come out of you when you are hit.

  • Don't know why but everytime I tried to record Q2 with fraps nothing every happened. It turns on but no video gets recorded.

  • @KrazyDanProductions I think this video was made with Steam's version of Q2 which may behave differently. I have another Q2 video which was made with the KMQUAKE2 engine which records just fine. (I tried to edit KMQUAKE2's media files to try and make the blaster, railgun, smoke, and bullet decals to look more like they do in Q2 so if your KMQUAKE2 looks different than mine, that's why)

  • Hmm - I saw a video where gamers complained about all the 'tips and hints' that modern video games got. Like they are made for stupid people, is the argument.

then I see this video: "You can crouch here" "press up to move up to the ladder'.

  • @JoshuatheKodiak Ah, the old hand holding vs. no hand holding argument. Windows vs. UNIX.

Myself, I like to believe that there's a holy grail quest for a balance of the two.

As for the help messages mentioned in this video, just think of how many people actually read them. By my guess, not many, since the game doesn't force you to read them.
