i just figured it out... on the magento website were you got the extension key for the free template, well below that it says -- Installation instructions and psd file available at our "server". click on server and download the zip file, then extract it and in the intsall folder there will be a web document called "install" it will come up as in this video with all the code and everthig... good luck ..
