Never test fly a Gee Bee (ok, every flight with a Gee Bee is a test flight... ;-) ) without the cowl mounted ! The critical CG runs instantly to the back and this happens. Why does the engine quit? Perhaps you would have got it down in 2 pieces ;-)

Looked tail heavy, engine running eratic and an unstable airplane all probably contributed to the crash.

Sorry to here, see that man, there a lovely plane, i fly my Gee Bee with a ( OS FS-120 III ) engine works well with the plane, But the plane its self is a right hand full, you have to fly it in when landing, when you throttle off its like some one is after pulling the hand break the way the speed stalls off, i fly 3d heli flying and F3A style with aircraft's. so you no where i am coming from.
