This video shows the Loaded Stateline Coal Train at three different locations on Ex. EJ&E trackage. The train originates at Jacob's Ranch Mine out in Wyoming as a BNSF train. Once it reaches Eola, IL, CN takes it from there with their own units. Today, a very nice lash-up powers this train.
CN SD40u #6011
GTW GP38-2 #4927
CN SD40u #6003

1st Location- Plainfield, IL. 3:17PM.
Just as the M342 wen't by, the stateline coal was clear to move out of the siding in Normantown and proceed East. From here, the Stateline is only minutes away from Joliet Yard, where it will sit until Metra traffic clears the diamonds East of the Yard.

2nd Location-Rowl Ave, Joliet, IL. 4:46PM.
The Stateline finally gets permission to cross the diamonds. In fact, it was almost tied down for hours because the Metra Rush was soon to start and would dominate the diamonds. The Stateline now moves slowly out of East Joliet Yard, onto the Matteson Subdivision (Ex. EJ&E Eastern Subdivision). The EMD power gives it all they got up the 1% grade to get the heavy train out of the valley. With the sanders in full blast, the units in run 8, one might mistake this video being shot in the Appalacians out East.

3rd Location- New Lenox, IL. 5:12PM.
The Stateline Coal still hammers along, with sanders still spewing as I catch it again in New Lenox. Railroaders know this location as "Brisbane", where the Ex. Wabash Metra Southwest Service crosses over the CN. I stand on Metra's bridge to get the last shot of this train.

  • boy those EMDs sure gave quite an effort during the second shot.

  • Great video. At Rowl Avenue all you have to do is replace the K3H with a K5LA or RS3L and you've got the West Slope! LOL! Great video and chase, Frank.

  • Quality video friend!

  • where is the destination of this train? 5/5

  • Wish I could come out there and catch some good shots like this

  • Nicely done Frank! Loved watching those EMDs take that coaler up grade.

  • Huh... try the Powder River Basin. You see so much you'll be sick of it.
