Portland, Oregon, summer 2009-- Portland recording artist and CEO of Sak Genius Ent, Malik Edwards, recently released his solo album Self Improvement. The album was highly anticipated after the release of his previous three collaborative mixtapes. With production by Sound Click, Vybe Beats, Sean Divine, Bossclickent, Mr. Coolman, and Royal Beats '07 Self Improvement contains a high level of production quality, creativity and talent. It has already collected the attention of local radio stations, fans, artists and various venues.
Malik Edwards created the Sak Genius label in 2003 after graduating from a college with AA degree in general studies. He has been performing since 2004 at various Portland venues including The Ohm, Club Platinum, Williamette University, Juneteenth and Ash St. Saloon. Malik is in the process of booking more shows in the near to further promote Self Improvement.
The style and subject matter of the album varies from a majority of what is being produced in the hip hop industry today. Malik puts an emphasis on personal power of creation, and it includes some autobiographical tracks about the artist's life. "It's really positive music," said Malik in regards to the new album, "I wanted to bring something inspiring back into hip hop."
The first single off Self Improvement is titled "Stay Wit Me" featuring vocals by Mia Lewis. It has received radio play on Jammin' 107.5, Portland's most popular hip hop radio station.
