Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes were two of the greatest poets of the 20th century. They were married but their relationship was never easy. They split up and, after writing her best poems, Sylvia killed herself. She was only 30. Ted Hughes wrote to Sylvia's mother after some time from her suicide. Can you imagine his sense of guilt? How difficult could it be to write such a letter? It's extremely moving.
The images are taken from SYLVIA (2003) starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Craig.

Richard Armitage read from the letters of the poet Ted Hughes in BBC Radio 4's Afternoon Play on 29th October 2007.

  • Just...wow! If it's anyone who can read a letter like this and make it justice - it's Richard Armitage. His talent and magnificent voice is truly mesmerizeing. I'll never grow tired of listening to him. Just...thanks!

  • Such a tragic story but so beautifuly read by Richard!

  • Bring on Thorin Oakenshield!

  • Tragic, haunting and beautifully read. Thank you~ I am so moved.

  • My favourite part is: 3:54 - "I didn't know how to start this letter—and now I don't know how to end it."

  • Hauntingly beautiful. I loved the film, am a big fan of Daniel Craig, and more recently Richard Armitage....so your combo of the two is fab. Think your ending is even better than the actual film's! Much more poignant the words trailing off to a deathly silence....

  • It's pathetic, I know, but I just saw the film a couple of weeks ago now and all I could do was imagine Richard Armitage in the part. It was very unfair to Daniel Craig, but I do think Richard would have been a bit more realistic and a bit more sympathetic at the same time. We know that he can make his viewers empathize with characters even if they ARE baddies--otherwise there wouldn't be so many of us who wanted Guy to win once in a while! :)

  • I am a bit as well. RA even looks more like Ted Hughes did - handsomer, but still with the long, angular face and dark hair, he bears more of a resemblance, I think. And, as we hear, he can do the accent. :)

  • Why does he does he compare Sylvia with Emily Dickinson? Just because they both happen to be poets and both women? Why not rank her with all poets, not just female ones. I don't want to go off on an anti-Ted Hughes tirade but really there were some things about this guy that were less than likable.

  • So moving, so honest, so raw. Beautiful.

Thank you so much for posting this.
