Our 6 hour bus ride from Lhasa to Shigatse went first through the mountains southwest of Lhasa to stop at the Turquoise Jewel Lake, "Yamdrok Tso," one of the four Sacred Lakes of the Tibetans. (Another such lake where monks see images in the water of the next incarnation of the Dalai Lama is now inaccessible because a Chinese Army outpost is stationed there.)
I cycled from llhasa to kathmandu back in 2003 and the ride up to the kumba la pass was hard work but the most breath taking thing was the view of yamdrok tso lake. back then the road was just a dirt track and there was no tourist bazaar. how things have changed and not for the best i fear.
