In part one Shinzen talks about concentration power as one of the three core skills of mindful awareness, along with sensory clarity and equanimity (see these other components in the Mindfulness Triple Skill-set playlist for the complementary skill-set). He talks about his first discoveries in concentration - while counting the breath in a Zen temple, and later extending concentration out into daily activities - which sold him on the meditative path. He started with "boring" tasks for about a year in a Shingon temple before they initiated him into the secret practices - a 100 day intensive which he humourosly goes on to describe. Filmed in May 2009 at Mt. Carmel Spiritual Centre.

  • Shizen is such a brilliant teacher, with eyes full of love & compassion..

I hope one day he can teach me..What a pity US is so far from Europe..

For the time being I have the honour & pleasure to listen to his amazing teachings, on my Ipod, every single day.

  • Recently discovered Shinzen and now listening to his "The Science of Enlightenment." I am full of respect and admiration for the depth of his wisdom and humility.

  • @anapanasati1970

Totally agree with you. BTW, your YT name hit's the mark in 2 ways with me!

  • this guy seems really great to me at the moment

  • This makes a lot of sense to me. I think some people are born with or experience various life conditions equivalent to the cold water purification baths Shinzen describes that force one to either be totally concentrated or else suffer painfully---physical pain, generalized anxiety, and other such conditions come to mind.

  • There are many good meditation teachers out there, but for me, no one puts it together with the clarity and depth that Shinzen does. There's no fluff here.

  • Great guy! I love him.. Does anyone know if he holds retreats in Europe?

  • This is really great info. Wonderful.

  • Funny, cute, brilliant. Few people on earth have it all sewn up quite like this. Shinzen rocks :)
