War for Reform: Russia to spend $6 bln on army revamp

The collapse of the military-oriented Soviet Union has seen a gradual decay of Russia's armed forces, and major reforms have been put in place to put them back on track. Moscow will pour over 600-billion dollars into refitting the army over the next ten years. And there's a new man in charge as well - Russia's former envoy to NATO will now put his long experience to good use, helping revamp the country's military. RT's Tom Barton explains why changes are needed.

Is this anything new ? The Russians are "modernizing" their army since about the times of Peter the great.When will they learn that economy,science,art and literature is more important then guns and missiles.

Then explain soviet involvement in Afghanistan, a country that had nothing to do with the cold war.

Russia has been an empire bent on expansion and the growth of its own power ever since Muscovy. Whenever there's a chance for the country to develop in a positive and peaceful manner, someone hijacks it and leads it down the imperialist path again. The most obvious lost chances being Alexander II's death, Kerensky's government and how Yeltsin ended his presidency.

Just fucking great.... Russia is upping military spending, while Finland is foreclosing whole brigades!

This is not good.

Finland will be practically defenseless in 2015, while russia will be approaching a peak in military readiness... I pray to God that Russia doesn't suffer any crisis that will push it to avert its people's attention towards weak neighbors...
