Description of Program: English and Visual Art lesson taught by Lórien Eck with poet and author Kate Hovey.

Students will learn how to make a hand-held mask depicting a god, goddess or hero from Greek mythology. Using examples from her own work, the author discusses methods for incorporating the characters symbols and emblems into the masks design. Applicable State Standards: Grade 6 Reading 3:6 Identify and analyze features of themes conveyed through characters, actions, and images. 3.7 Explain the effects of common literary devices (e.g., symbolism, imagery, metaphor) in a variety of fictional and nonfictional texts.
