TWO SPIRITS, the documentary directed by Lydia Nibley and produced by Say Yes Quickly Productions, will have its world premiere on Saturday, November 21 at the Starz Denver Film Festival.
The film will screen at 12:30 p.m. in the 520-seat King Center Concert Hall on the University of Colorado at Denvers downtown Auraria campus, and will be followed by a panel discussion and reception.
Two Spirits and the Fred Martinez Project have received the Monette-Horwitz Distinguished Achievement Award for outstanding activism, research, and scholarship to combat homophobia. And the U.S. Office of the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights in Washington has joined more than fifty national organizations as an outreach partner.
The documentary film interweaves the tragic story of a mothers loss of her son with a revealing look at the largely unknown history of a time when the world wasnt simply divided into male and female and many Native American cultures held places of honor for people of integrated genders.
Fred Martinez was nádleehí, a male-bodied person with a feminine essence, a special gift according to his ancient Navajo culture. He was one of the youngest hate-crime victims in modern history when he was brutally murdered at sixteen by a young man who bragged to friends that he had bug-smashed a fag. TWO SPIRITS explores the life and death of a boy who was also a girl and the essentially spiritual nature of gender and sexuality. The film makes the case that in the twenty-first century we need to return to traditional values.

Fred, or FC as we called him, was a very special friend of many in our community and to me personally; one of my true and closest friend. I was surprised and thrilled to finally hear, today!, that this film was going to be released. I pray for his family as they cope with the loss of a kind, outgoing, and unique person. My love, support and prayers goes especially to his mother, Pauline, who adored, loved, and accepted her precious baby. I love you FC. I will remember you always. ~Mikiah Jerry~
The sad truth is there is always at least two victims of a hate crime! Two lives in the least are turned upside down! The evil is a spirit! It is passed on by people that feel they can do it and not get any repercussions! The ones that spread it sit back and smile as others take the penalty! It is time to stop the fuel! Even if they were voted into office!
Brilliant trailer. It helps viewers know that this is a story which must be told, preserved, and shared with the world. I look forward to watching the full-length documentary film.
The film is currently in the final stages of post-production, and it will be completed and released just as soon as our final fund-raising efforts are successful. We hope to have its official premiere at a major film festival in the fall. The DVD will be released sometime in the late fall of 2009, and we will notify you immediately when it becomes available.

This is an absolutely excellent trailer, about an absolutely horrible tragedy. I'll look for it when it comes out. They look like they'll make a good movie.
