That's awesome! One of the best vids I have ever seen on YT. The sound is excellent. Cranked up on the home stereo it's almost like being there. Your friend is right though - they put two locos on a little short train and give him one DFT for 60-odd wagons!

That sounds about right. They use the same EMD 12-645 engines as the DC classes but the DFT and B classes use a turbocharged version rather than a Roots-blown type. That way it can better use the power to drive its six traction motors. I read they have a tractive effort of about 200kN
I wish they'd put a 12-710 engine in there. Not only do they pack some serious wallop, they sound wickedly sweet too (710 cubic inches per cylinder)

the original df sounded cool too

man that is such a nice sounding loco....and that's a serious load it's pulling...nice piece of driving to....what HP is the DFT?

@185pilot yeah it was a pretty heavy load for one DFT... about 2000 Tonne my mate reckoned (he was driving it) ... power output of the DFT is 2400HP

@HDDcam73 I thought it's around 2550hp because it uses the 12-645E3C engine. Look it up on Wikipedia. There's a loco based in Victoria that uses the same engine as I heard

@5irRatchet Yeah I've heard of engine ratings from 2300 through to 2600HP... the info I found on Wikipedia said 2400HP... so maybe NZ got a toned down version? :-)
