In the raids, one button thrusts (attack) and the other parries (defend). When your opponent thrusts you parry to deflect his blow, and then thrust to hit him. It doesn't really telegraphy the moves but they have a pattern. You just have to watch the first thing they do.
Umm... you won the joust. That's why you had so much more life in the ball and chain fight. Yea, you won the joust both times. XD
