NDP Leader Jack Layton Evades, Denies, and Ignores Jane Taber on Key Questions Surrounding Deal with Pot Parties

Question Period, 09/21/2008

Does Layton have something to hide? You decide. Watch and listen carefully.

Taber to Layton @ 1:15 : "This has nothing to do with the question I was asking you."

@ 2:49 "I feel like we're going sort of on a parallel universe here, because you don't want to answer my questions about these pot candidates!"

------------------------------------

NDP LEADER JACK LAYTON, SEPTEMBER 20, 2008:

"We favour decriminalization of marijuana," Layton said. "We have for a long time. That's NO SUPRISE to anybody. I was asked these same questions in 2004 and 2006."

COMPARE TO:

OTTAWA -- NDP Leader Jack Layton's call for legalizing marijuana is not getting the support of all of his MPs.

Earlier this month, Mr. Layton told the Vancouver-based Internet site Pot TV that marijuana is "a wonderful substance" that should be legalized and urged pot smokers to vote for the NDP in the federal election next spring.
...
"I'll be urging that we move beyond decriminalization," Mr. Layton said in an interview. "We need to modernize our laws." No other leader of a major federal political party has come out in support of legalizing marijuana."

-----------------------------------

When we asked if, in light of controversial publicity last election about Mr. Layton's pro-legalization & regulation stance, was the NDP was rethinking it's drug reform policy?

"No," he said "our policy is very much in favour of putting in place decriminalization ___and legalization___, allowing for regulations regarding age and driving concerns. ___That is the policy we will be running on and it has been our policy for sometime.___" [emphasis added]

JACK LAYTON, OCTOBER 2003 POT-TV @ 00:00:00:

"Folks you're watching POT-TV. I'm Jack Layton leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, and I'd like to invite you to support our party which is in favour of modernizing our marijuana laws, and creating a legal environment in which people can enjoy their marijuana in the peace and quiet of their own home or in a cafe without having to worry about being criminalized."

JACK LAYTON, OCTOBER 2003 POT-TV (after being asked the question: "Do you think anybody should go to jail for having anything to do with marijuana, whether its selling, or buying, or growing? or any of those things?"):

"No. I don't."

JACK LAYTON, OCTOBER 2003 POT-TV @ 00:11:35:

"I know you were following our leadership contest and all of our candidates running for leader took the position that IT SHOULD BE LEGALIZED [emphasis added], and I think that that shows that really throughout our party, we are at that stage."

JACK LAYTON, OCTOBER 2003 POT-TV:

"Well, we'd like to see it be the sort of legislation that essentially allows people to consume marijuana, particularly that they might grow themselves, but ultimately as well some technique that would allow them to purchase it safely, knowing what the quality is, knowing what's there, and have that all be a legal activity."

8 Months after NDP Leader Jack Layton's sit down with Godfather of Pot Marc Emery, in June 2004 fair-weather friend Layton gives more shout outs to his pals at POT-TV, invites them into the party and calls for "a good discussion with Canadians" about rules for "production [of marijuana] for personal use". Urges move beyond decrim to "rules based framework" or as everyone else knows it, legalization...

  • WoW he totally changed that questions are you sure you didn't edit it... because how do guns relate to marijuana...like whattt!!!??? and even after being asked four times he still talks about unrelated issues

  • nope, this video is unedited in it's original form (aside from YouTube Annotation). As Jane said herself, Layton's evasiveness and failure to address the question made her feel like Layton is in a parallel universe. One where I guess he chooses the questions he answers and talks over the ones that he has no good answers for.

  • all people serving Jail time must also take a "Fire Arm Safety" course?

  • Vote NDP!

  • wow jane taber is a bitch. Vote NDP!

  • Young & old Canadians in prison on marijuana charges might think this is an important issue. Maybe people are discussing prohibition over the breakfast table. Maybe people are tired of a corrupt government denying the most medicinal plant in history to everyone. Turn your back on Marc Emery just like Harper!!!

  • Young & old Canadians in prison on marijuana charges might think this is an important issue. Maybe people are discussing prohibition over the breakfast table. Maybe people are tired of a corrupt government denying the most medicinal plant in history to everyone. Jack, please don't back down.

  • Have the leafs fired ron wilson yet.

  • Who's on your side folks?the liberals and Conservatives don't want an inquiry into the G20 civil rights abuses..but the NDP does

  • Maybe, it's not that he wouldn't answer the question... maybe the question is beneath the issues that Canadians are facing. And, at the end he did address it. The NDP has been in favour of decriminalization for a long time... So there was no "Deal" with Emry.

Her question is banal in the scope of the issues that were being tabled at the time.

  • @alichatur My god!!!! This guy would not answer a simple question!

Maybe "wacky Jacky" needs to come clean with Canadians!

    (Just a suggestion....)
