Jimmie Johnson got back to his winning ways this afternoon as the reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion held off a charge by teammates Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton to win the Auto Club 500.

Johnson, who has won an unprecedented four consecutive titles, assumed the lead during a caution period and then held on for the final 20 laps after the restart at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.

"Life is good, we're glad to be back in Victory Lane," he said.

It was the fifth career victory at Auto Club Speedway for Johnson, who already had held the record for most Cup series wins at the two-mile oval.

The win also enabled Johnson to quickly bounce back from his performance at the season-opening Daytona 500 a week ago, when mechanical problems left him with a 35th-place finish.

Harvick finished second, followed by Burton, his teammate at Richard Childress Racing. Mark Martin, Johnson's teammate at Hendrick Motorsports, was fourth.

  • I personally thought this was a great race. I'm a Newman fan and it sucks what happened to him, but I was excited watching Harvick catch Johnson.

All of this Johnson bashing is getting old. Why do people want to punish someone for being successful, shouldn't you be angry with the other teams that are not doing well?

By the way if the last two races are anything to go by (which it is too early to tell really) RCR may be the ones to bring down Hendrick this season. It is getting exciting.

  • Johnson caught a break? Since when does that happen? /sarcasm

  • Jimmie won because Harvick made a mistake and drove into the wall. Harvick could've caught Jimmie, which is why in 2011 he redeemed himself and passed him on the last lap.

  • 1st win at Fontana and 48th win at Fontana.

  • This was damn near the EXACT same situation that just happened today at the spring Cali race and essentially Harvick got a do over and didn't mess up. Stepping stone race to being a contender perhaps?

  • That was an intense last 10 laps or so. I'm glad Jimmie pulled it out, though.

  • OMG It has 4848 views!

  • harvick rules

  • Im still waiting for someone whether it would be a commentator, pit road reporter, crew chief,or even a driver, etc. to quit and tell nascar to shove it up their ass because its so terrible. The cars are NOT built to race. You know the commentators want to say something(this sucks, boooring,or something like that). But they cant because they will lose their job. SO WHAT!!!! They can find another job. Fuck nascar! Get rid of the COT, get rid of TOYOTA(supposed to be AMERICAN cars),

  • Nascar hasnt been a sport since about 2000. Its been basically FOLLOW THE LEADER. I remember not long ago a question was asked: Does nascar favor certain drivers? They have the nerve to say that when they know the answer to that. The cars are NOT built the same. They are not STOCK CARS! If they were built the same, chevrolet wouldnt be so dominant over the years. I tell you what, Mr. France better do something soon or else sooner or later Nascar will shut down.

  • AND since 02' He/Hendrick generated the most $ to work with! Gee,wonder how he's come to those "stats!" God knows, NOT Skill! Not only has he NEVER won under the Pre-Chase rule,he's NEVER led in pts after the 26 reg season races. Yet has @17 Chase wins. Beyond Sketchy! HE EVEN ADMITS having "an inherent advantage" due to the Chase tracks. Funny how he cant win then SUDDENLY wins the 1st 3 Chase events; Even after busted w/an illegal car!(07') He's the EPITOME of Fixed/Favored racing Bullshit!

  • Do you guys believe the vortex theory?
