This is a video of my high school orchestra performing Mason Williams' Classical Gas. That's me at the guitar, and that laughing you here in the beginning is one of the second violinists putting on a sombrero and poncho. I don't know why he did that. It's not even a Spanish song. And my dad filmed. Thanks dad.

It's kind of been a tradition for a senior to pick a song to perform at the last concert of the year. Last year a senior composed Metallica's No Leaf Clover (link to video below), and the year before that a senior composed Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. This year it was my turn so I chose, in my opinion, one of the greatest pieces ever composed for an orchestra: Classical Gas. Only I didn't have to compose any of it. Mason Williams actually gave me the sheet music for the entire orchestra!

I attained the music through Mason William's fansite (link below), and after a few e-mails and phone calls (with the famous Mason Williams himself), the sheet music was mine.

Mason Williams was a writer for The mid-60's hit show, "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" where he wrote song's as well as comedy scenes for the show. In the beginning of the second season of the show, Williams began to compose the instrumental Classical Gas in between comedy bits. It was originally titled Classical Gasoline, because Williams envisioned the song as the "fuel for the classical guitar." When it appeared on The Mason Williams Phonograph Record album in 1968, the record company accidentally abbreviated it to "Classical Gas", and thus the name stuck.

The song won three Grammy Awards in 1968, and still receives air time on the radio to this day.

  • @brandonofof The band wasn't that great, but having a good classical guitarist that can read sheet music is pretty much a win. My point is, your argument is invalid.

  • @brandonofof Your justification being?

  • I'm guessing you play cello because 2ed chair cello was left empty pretty good playin.

  • its the drummers fault this song is failed he was like speeding up and slowing down random as fuck everyone else was doing alright except the autrocious sound of the acoustic what is that a first act from wal-mart shit

  • fail u don't see guitarist with a score

  • Very interesting drum work, has almost a synthetic feel to the style. Very enjoyable rendition, the arrangement is a little better than Mike Posts.

  • For a high school band it sound alright. I give respect to you guys and don't listen to these people calling it a fail. I used to play bass clarinet in high school. The guitarist was great. BTW loved the sombrero and poncho.

  • Drummer is rushing like crazy. The violins and violas are out of tune.

  • it almost sounded like classical gas except for the fail and tad bit of suck.
