Duet by Catherine Britt and Elton John. Available on her album Too Far Gone. Written by Catherine Britt and Jerry Salley.

A fire that's left unattended
Surely will burn out and die
Now that we're down to nothing but ashes
Is this where we both say goodbye

chorus:
Is this where two hearts and break down and cry
Is this where we let go and give up the fight
Have we reached the point where it's too late to try
Is this where we both say goodbye

It's so hard to go on pretending
The truth is we're living a lie
And it kills me to know our love's dying
Is this where we both say goodbye

[repeat chorus]

Have we reached the point where it's too late to try
Is this where we both say goodbye

  • Sir Elton's onlly US top 40 country hit. He seemed to get his tenor range back, with this 1.

  • @sweetandsarcastic Maybe it's on an Australia-only version but definitely not listed on the version on her site.

  • @1921Willie Me either. :( I do believe this was her second single with RCA before they dropped her - and never released the album that would've had this on it. I do not understand how ANYONE could drop an artist that teamed with Elton on such a duet. Can't believe how country he sounds and have wanted to own this song since the day I first heard it on the radio (and was stunned to find out it was Elton then. Have always loved him but he sounds SO country).

  • @DaveWollenberg Based on the documentaries I've seen, he claimed that he used excessive amounts of alcohol and weed to come down from his coke high. He did say they were sometimes spliffs so whether they did have tobacco in them or not I don't know. I agree that his younger tenor voice was great but personally I liked his fully developed mid 80's voice. It was a bit deeper but he still had the falsetto intact. I think his post surgery voice was at it's best during the late 80's. Have a good day.

  • @weirdguy75 I liked 'im better as a tenor. I did see Elton pictured in his box set. with SOME sort of cig in his hand. You're sayin' that it wasn't a tobacco one, right?

  • @DaveWollenberg He didn't smoke cigs but weed from time to time. It was his heavy cocaine use and drinking along with not giving his voice a break that resulted in vocal nodules. He had the surgery in early 87.

  • Elton is such a fan of real talent. Catherine is very fortunate but also deserving that Elton gave her this leg up in the biz. Great song, real country music!!

  • I was priveleged enough to both attend high school and be friends with Catherine!

  • Elton had vocal cord surgery back in the '80s, combined with his smokin', which turned him from a tenor, to a baritone. Catherine and Elton hit #38 in Billboard, 8-27-05. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • @mrseltonjohn It is beautiful :)
