So far climate change and the need for dramatic resource efficiency have been perceived as a problem. Increasingly, however, governments around the world are starting to use Information and Communication Technology in a way that turns problems into opportunities. Innovative products and services such as teleworking can enable significant carbon reductions, and contribute to mitigating climate change. The Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) has analysed how governments have incorporated such low-carbon ICT solutions in broadband plans, digital strategies and other policy areas, and created a web-tool for identifying leadership in this respect. The workshop will introduce GeSI's web-tool and facilitate a discussion with leading governments on what sort of best practices drive the adoption of low-carbon ICT solutions in broadband plans and digital strategies. Participants can expect a lively debate on what policies are needed to make low-carbon development a driver for innovation, job creation and increased revenue flows for those delivering low-carbon ICT solutions.
