@Strumelia Ok these are YELLOW JACKETS not ground bees! Ground bees are solitary bees that dig tunnels and provision the nest with pollen for their babies which will emerge the next year. They don't live in colonies though they will sometimes nest close to eachother making it seem like there is a colony. This for sure is a yellow jacket nest Vespula sp. Look it up!
@Strumella - I don't know what bees you are looking at, but I just mowed over a ground bee hole while mowing my yard and have about a dozen stings and welts. These bees are definitely not "docile" @stephenie219. They are aggressive and painful!
They won't hurt you. They are not aggressive like wasps. Just run your mower along and avoid that area a little if you prefer. For goodness sakes, but this is silly! They are ground bees and they are gentle. Not yellow jackets. Just do a bit of googling on 'ground bees' and 'miner bees'.
And to Chriskapet- there is no 'main swarm'...these are solitary bees- they each live completely alone in their own tunnel.
scared shitless? what...?

There is a big difference between yellow jackets and bees. Bees gather nectar and pollen. While yellow jackets eat meat.

these bees are docile, they wont bother you if you dont bother them. even if you are rite up close to thier hole, they usually wont attack.
