George Enescu plays Bach sonatas - recorded 1948 - 49
- Sonata 2 in A minor, Part 1, which should be :
1 Grave
Recently, I had the original Continental records of Georges Enescu playing the Bach sonatas and partitas in my hands, although I don't own them. I recorded them all, as they are very rare. Somehow I think that, if there would be something like a "Unesco list of recordings" this might very well be included. It is therefor only fair to offer these complete recordings on youtube... for the sake of mankind.
Not all the sides were in great shape but I tried to avoid de-clicking and equalizing too firmly, for the risk of losing the dynamics of sound. So some parts, especially the beginning of each side, are rather scratchy. Nevertheless you might be pleased with the truly intimate sound of the originals, rather then digitally over-mastered cd's.
You can find a playlist of the complete work in my playlists.
Enjoy !!
For those who wonder why I deleted previous videos and reloaded them : I have been wondering before why the sound was so bad, and the violin screaming like it did. It turned out I used the wrong equalization curve to restore the recordings, which is not the obvious thing with micro-groove prior to 1955, when lp equalization was set to standard RIAA.
So I've redone my homework and I think it has much improved ;-)
This is what it says on the leaflet included in the records, to wet your whistle.
" His masterful interpretations and playing of the six Bach unaccompanied violin sonatas, presented by Continental Records in this series, not only fill a much needed requirement for the master compositions, but provide an achievement which will go down in recorded history as one of the most unique presentations of all time. This series presents the works as one of the greatest of music's past immortals played and interpreted by the most important living figure capable of doing justice to Bach's music. Enesco's approach to Bach shows technical mastery, but it also reveals a deep humility and reverence toward his subject matter which he has studied so well over many decades. As such, it approaches the millennium in the art of preservation of these masterworks."
thanks! what beautiful soulful playing.
