Note: the smoke at the start was from the fire before that I put out.

I used a Doan Magnesium Firestarter Tool and a Swedish Firesteel (Cadet Model) which are both kept on 550 paracord.

I use a combination instead of one because I find that the magnesium acts as a secondary tinder whilst the separate (and dedicated) firesteel is much faster and easier in terms of producing sparks.

I was in my garden so I used ordinary toilet paper as tinder.

Knife is an Ontario SP1 in 1095 steel. Used false edge so I don't damage my main one.

  • That's a nice piece of survival equipment to have around. Outdoorsman?

  • Well I'd like to be. It's hard to find pure wilderness out in the UK. For now, most of my knowledge is theoretical.

  • well this tool is made for a slightly different purpose for different situations.

It's more of a back-up/survival tool rather than your primary fire starting tool although some may use it as such.

A lighter would be a lot faster especially with a Turboflame lighter or something. The average BIC is a bit flimsy in my opinion and cannot light stuff at extreme angles.

  • did your flint pop out of your mag bar?

  • @MistaGreyDay I love my Zippo, but it uses Lighter Fluid (Naptha) which evaporates. Butane lighters are interesting too, but when it comes to having to survive over long periods, lighters run out of fuel. And you may not have access to Naptha or Butane. The firesteel is the most basic means of starting fires. The most fun way of starting fires is a Zippo :)

  • @lockheed123 ya i hear ya. me to i want to go back packing realy bad

  • sounds awesome!

  • u need to move to america, or canada, if u love outdoors like i do and i live in northern california where theres plenty of wilderness. tomorrow im doing a 7 mile hike up kanaka peak by whiskey town by myself to test out my new camelbak

  • what is the magnesium for? ive seen people light plain tinder, and when you say its a back up incase of wet matchss would the flint lightdamp tinder or am i being stupid? Great vid!

  • Ah, ruffing it for a week is good enough. Or, take a trip up the Canada for a hunting trip eh? Get plenty of pure wilderness over there! None the less, that's a nice thing to have around in case of emergencies even in the house.

  • I just thought i would add that Bounty is Called Plenty now, how crap is that lol they shouldnt have changed the name hahaha
