The high-speed train that can destroy the Sagrada Família (and the Milà House)

The Department of Promotion of the Spanish State has approved a project that puts a serious danger the Sagrada Família (and the Milà House), the greatest works of the architect Antoni Gaudí, in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain). The project in question is the imminent construction of a tunnel for a high-speed train (TGV or BIRD - High Spanish Speed-) that will pass below the main face of the building, the Front called the Glory (Mallorca Street).

The following issues must be considered:
1. The vulnerability and the weight of a building as unique as this one.
2. The unstable nature of the foundation of the construction and the underground currents that cross it.
3. The work with the tunnel will put a strain to the Sacred Family and its surroundings. The work will last 28 months.
4. Bearing in mind that the monument every day receives an average of 7.000 daily visits.

It is a shame to put forward a similar project, since partial detachments or even a total collapse of the temple have not been considered. Any collapse of the building would be a danger for the construction workers and/or visitors -- the outcome could be fatal. The building is declared Patrimony of the Humanity by UNESCO.

But we would also like to mention that this is not the only building by Gaudi that is affected by the construction work, since La Pedrera (Casa Milà) is in the tracing of the tunnel. Other celebrated buildings of the Catalan modernism, a singular farmhouse of the XIVth century, a refuge of the Civil war (1936-1939) and two archaeological deposits, are affected as well, not to mention hundreds of housings of worried citizens living close to the Sacred Family.

Barcelona has a great metro network, there shouldn't be building a high speed train under the city.

Why the fuck does the government want a high speed train underneath the Sagrada Familia? The building will collapse from the hole they'll drill through the foundation of the church and then thousands of workers could be buried. This project is such a high risk to take. Billions of dollars are needed and thousands of workers have to be employed. What are they thinking? Probably drunk when the government decided on this.

@thewhitebarrywhite This tunnel has already been made in october 2010 and nothing happened. Trains don't pass through it yet. It is not be under the monument, it is placed deep, deep under the street next to it, without touching its structure at all. Plus there are 2 subway lines that pass too on the streets next to the monument and they are even closer to it. Don't worry, the construction is sure and nothing will happen :)

The train will pass deep under a STREET and not under the monument, the tunnel doesn't even touch its structure, and it has already been made 9 months ago and absolutely nothing happened; between the building and the tunnel there are pylons that protect it, it's a SURE construction, the engineers know what they are doing
