Republican Senator John Carlson peddles high-deductible health care plans through his Bemidji, MN insurance agency. He took to the floor of the MN Senate to explain how state workers can come out ahead if only they would, like him, avoid visits to the doctor.

  • This isn't a republican, this is a total idiot!

  • The state WON'T pay for the tens of thousands of dollars in after care and meds that the majority of heart attack victims need, however. Most medicines that are needed after a heart attack run into the high hundred if not thousands of dollars per month. That's easy for Carlson who would be double dipping insurance. He'll be on the state plan AND his American Family plan, which I believe he receives at 10% of the premium cost. He's hoping you're dumb enough to take the soundbite, and you did

  • With this plan the state would put $1500 in the employee's account at the start of the year. This is meant to cover non-catastrophic care. Catastrophic care is still fully covered by the state beyond that first $2000/yr deductible (this part was left out of the video to negatively slant the proposal). Thus, if you have a heart attack during the second year of the plan you take $2000 of the $3000 in your account to pay your deductible and the state pays the rest. Sounds like a good deal to me.

  • Carlson is the owner of an INSURANCE agency in Bemidji. He sells health insurance for American Family, along with their other products. According to AF's website, agents and full time employees of American Family have up to 90% of their health insurance coverage paid for by American Family. Carlson's wife is the sole employee in his office. So he's not getting insurance on the backs of the taxpayer, he has all the coverage he could ever want for next to nothing from his employer.

  • Okay let me try to understand, his healthcare plan's plan is to wait until it's too late to do anything about it?

HAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that's just stupid and believe me I know stupid! I've been a professional stupid person for over 20 years and I can tell you that is stupid.

  • Listen, I have green eyes for money as much as the next fellow, but that old adage remains true: You can't take it with you. Also, where in the U.S. of A can you get medical treatment for a heartattack for only a thousand dollar? Hell the ambulance to haul your fat ass to the hospital probably costs 2 thousand dollars.

  • Please hurry up, have your heart attack and get the fuck outta the way.

  • The man is bat s*** crazy. NOT going to the doctor is not a good thing.

  • If this guy ever did go to the doctor he would be given something called a "Cholesterol test" and told to cut back on the KFC.

  • republican b.s. this is why we can't have nice things.
