@billyguns2 Di Stefano knew how to cover, but he chose not to.There are many eamples of GDScovering here onYT.At times Gigli and Del Monaco sang open in the passaggio, but would cover on top.GDS has a (A Non Credevi Tu)&(Addio Mignon)which is a lower tessitura, but cover well& sounds extremely beautiful. There are selections of I Puritani arias (A Te O Cara) &duet Vieni Fra Queste Braccia, where Di Stefano is forced to cover in the passaggio and also hitting the covered C sharps in both arias.Enjoy

When it came to singing these Sicilian and Neapolitan popular arias, NO ONE could do it better than Pippo!!! The "motivo" in his voice is unsurpassed!!!

who made this song?

Thanks vladutze84 for this clip.

Il Grande Pippo does it again. This has got to be one of the most passionate and impressive performances of this classic Neapolitan song, voluminous yet intensely moving and just so right. You really believe him when he sings of "you who do not cry". He was the master of the Neapolitan. What a tragic way his life ended so unneccessary and unworthy of this great artiste.

INCREDIBLE!!!!!! that expression of soul in every note is something that we shall never se again. Not only is it clear in terms of diction but in intetion and expression of feeling. No one else can create that incredible 'dolce amaro" like his. Bravo e grazi

@FabDN41 I was looking for the right superlative to describe this masterpiecee. Bravo, you did it for me! Oh Giuseppe, I wish I could have been in the audience at this performance. R.I.P Maestro!

@hiyadroogs :Yes, of course there's a difference between open vowels and open notes, no argument there. What happened to his voice was singing open too high in his voice and at full volume. I agree that any singer who can decrescendo high in their voice has quite a fine technique. Zinka, Caballe, Corelli, Warren.. spring to mind. Never heard di Stefano do that though perhaps he could early in his career.

@countceprano Any tenor who can sing a full voice high C, & fine it away to pianissimo, has nothing of note wrong with his fundamental technique. Unfortunately, most singers develop bad vocal habits that eventually become a permanent change in the technique.
There is a Caruso record that illustrates open vowels while keeping the head register focused. In Deserto In Terra, he sings a high C on the OO vowel. He then sings the same note on AH but retains the same vocal position as the OO.
Would really like to know if there is more GDS video from this source.
