Untied Nations, New York, 25 February 2010 - Rogelio Fernandez Castilla, Executive Coordinator on Censuses for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), addressed reporters at a press conference today on the challenges faced by countries emerging from conflict when conducting censuses.
Castilla emphasized the importance of censuses in gathering important data so countries may "better allocate resources and better organize their development efforts."
He also underlined the "crucial" role censuses play in helping countries emerging from conflict or disasters guide their democratization efforts.
2010 will see 78 countries, including the United States, participate in a global census effort covering a total of 3 billion people. By 2011, the UN hopes to add another 2 billion global citizens to the count.
