OF COURSE it's a joke.

Originally the song is from a play called "BoyGroove", the story of the (utterly fictitious) multiplatinum boy-band of the same name. Most of it is fairly obviously a parody of Justin Timberlake's career, though it gets shots in at lots of other pop music icons of recent years too. I strongly recommend seeing it if you ever have a chance; very few things have ever made me laugh so hard in my life.
