The Garden of Gethsemane is at the foot of the Mount of Olives. On the night of His betrayal our Lord left the city of Jerusalem and crossed through the Kidron Valley and into the Garden of Gethsemane (Matt. 26:36; John 18:1). This was a favorite spot of Jesus and where he spent his last night.

The name "Gethsemane" is derived from the Hebrew words "Gat", which means "a place for pressing" and "Shemanim", which means "oils." the Garden of Gethsemane was where olives from the Mount of Olives were pressed into oil. After the Last Supper, Jesus came to this garden with his disciples to pray and to let himself be arrested (John 18:2-12), thus setting in motion the events that led to his crucifixion the next day.

There are eight olive trees in this garden that may be at least 2,000 - 3,000 years old. They still bear fruit. If they are not the actual trees in the area where Jesus prayed, then they could have been young saplings when Jesus came here with the disciples on that night after the Last Supper (Matt. 26:36; Mark 14:32; John 18:1).
Visitors to of the Garden of Gethsemane are amazed when they learn that the gnarled olive trees they see could have been young saplings when Jesus came here with the disciples on that fateful night after the Last Supper (Matt. 26:36; Mark 14:32; John 18:1). Today the ancient trees rise from manicured flower beds; in Jesus' time this would have been an olive grove where an olive-oil press -- gethsemane in Greek -- was located.

The impressive Church of All Nations, built in the 1920s over earlier churches, relates the events of this place in brilliantly detailed floor-to ceiling mosaics: Jesus praying alone (Mark 14:35-36); Judas' betrayal of Jesus (Matt. 26:48); the cutting off of the ear of the High Priest's servant (Mark 14:47).
The Church of agony is close to the garden. In front of the garden we see the old wall of Jerusalem and newly planted olive saplings.
It was really thrilling to imagine that it was here the Lord was betrayed by his own disciple, forgeting the fact that all of us betray him almost every day?If Judas was bad we are worse.
If Judas betrayed him for money we betray him for everything - money, time, friendship and what not?
The Church of Agony has beautiful paintings.
