In preclinical drug discovery, the hit compounds are usually tested in cell lines and only the most interesting leads are forwarded to animal models followed by clinical trials. Many of the phase studies fail due to lack of efficacy indicating that the preclinical models used are not predictive enough. VTT has developed miniaturized, organotypic 3D cell culture models that recapitulate key aspects of solid cancers. In contrast to classic cell culture models, actual multicellular tissues are formed when cells are cultured in 3D conditions. The complex cell-cell interactions are faithfully recapitulated and thus a much more realistic picture of tumor biology is obtained.
