MICHEL HOUELLEBECQ IN A DISCUSSION WITH RACHID AMIROU
The idea of all-inclusive journeys, as literally carried to extremes in Houellebecqs novel Platform (2001), was an important impulse for the exhibition All-Inclusive in the SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT. In the context of the show, Michel Houellebecq and the sociologist Rachid Amirou talked about phenomena and effects of todays touristic societies a topic they already discussed when Platform was being written. Houellebecq repeatedly quotes Amirous writings and explores crucial issues of the sociologist in his work: which influence can a touristic society have on its inner world? What is an individuals happiness comprised of, and what is that denies this happiness in everyday life?

Die Idee der All-Inclusive-Reise, wie sie in Houellebecqs Roman „Plattform (2001) literarisch auf die Spitze getrieben wird, war ein wichtiger Impuls für die „All-Inclusive-Ausstellung in der Schirn Kunsthalle. Im Rahmen der Ausstellung sprachen Michel Houellebecq und der Soziologe Rachid Amirou über Phänomene und Auswirkungen heutiger touristischer Gesellschaften ein Thema, zu dem sie sich bereits zur Entstehungszeit von „Plattform austauschten. Mehrfach zitiert Houellebecq in seinem Roman aus Amirous Schriften und spürt dabei wesentlichen Fragen des Soziologen nach: Welchen Einfluss kann eine touristische Gesellschaft auf deren Innenwelt ausüben? Worin besteht das Glück des Einzelnen, und wodurch wird dieses Glück im alltäglichen Leben verwehrt?

I like this writer Mr Houellebecq, but how can somebody talk so slow, that it need enormus patience to stay withe the discussion ...
