A short speech describing the main idea of Desirism, a theory of moral realism defended by Alonzo Fyfe - except that I don't mention the name of the theory or talk about its meta-ethical foundations, but rather describe it an an accessible level.

  • Epic win.

  • what i'm saying is u are displaying your ignorance. you obviously only watched the first minute and then stopped immediately after hearing the word "faith". even if they were relevant to this video, your 3 points/assertions are flawed. your vulgar hostility is typical of the fundamentalist/radical theists u seem to detest.

  • @mebe84 sorry but I can't understand what do you want to say...

  • @insanewarlock666 it's only of interest to people who have given a lot of thought to the subject of morality. but why so hostile? r u in that o.21%?

  • @insanewarlock666 it's only of interest to people who have given a lot of thought to the subject of morality. but why

  • we need faith to live in better world? bullshit. look at history guys! nothing has brought more death than theism. do you know that 93% of scientists don't believe in bullshit called god? in prison there are 0.21% of atheists and 75% of christians! do we need faith in something higher than we to live in a better world? if you think so FUCK YOU IDIOT

  • The moral theory asserts that a 'good desire' is that desire that tends to fulfill other desires.

A 'bad desire' is that desire that tends to thwart desires.

A good act is that act that would be done by a person with only good desires.

A bad act is an act that a good person would not do.

And, as you have probably guessed by now, a good person is a person with only good desires.

    Its called desire utilitarianism

  • Also, I wonder what the foundation for the moral system is--how do you answer somebody who says why strive for moral excellence at all if it's not of interest to you? Or if you say "empathy is good" and if somebody else says "I disagree," what makes the guy in favor of empathy right?

But yes, you sure are a darn good public speaker.

  • This seems like a strategy for getting people to act morally, not a system of morality. Desirism tells us how we may get people to act in certain ways, but in this speech I didn't hear how we determine what the "right thing" is. This seems to me more psychological than moral.

    continued.

  • Your body language is impressive. Were you always this good, or did you learn the skills at Toastmasters?
