So... It was John Lennon's birthday in 2010 and I was looking up some of his music on the Internet when I came across the album "Walls and Bridges" ...I looked at the sketch of the person on the lower half of the album's artwork and thought...Oh my gosh...that's me!!...at least, me as I looked in the 80's. So... I found a still from my video Unidos Por Amor (live performance) from 1988, and put it together with the album art and you can see how hauntingly similar my face is to the face on the album...The person on the cover is named Mr. Hobs in the lyric sheet insert.
I bought Walls and Bridges when it first came out in the states, back in the seventies, because I fell in love with the song No 9 Dream back then. I never caught the face on the cover similarity because I would not look like that for yet another 11 years...After discovering this interesting quirk, however, I thought...This obviously must be some kind of Time Warp--Spin through the Wormhole event... (LOL LOL LOL!) So, I thought I should complete the time loop by doing a cover of the song...
Immediately I knew to call it Mr. "Hobs' Sacred Heart Mix". I had been listening to the Traveling Wilburies recently, so rather than just doing a cover from scratch, I thought it would be cool to do a special mash-up of some very special songs by some amazing artists, and slide it all through the wormhole into the present...
What is interesting is that before even listening to any of the songs to see if this might even work, I just "knew" to do the following:
1. Use the original track straight off the vinyl from my original album release as the basis of the remake-- I still had my original copy in mint condition. 2. Slow down the track to 99.9 beats a minute (9 was John's number and it is my power number in numerology...)
3. Start bringing it into the present by mashing it up with the trance track Animal by Lost It.com (Perfecto label, released in 2000 )
4. Add in a sample of the track Dreams by Fleetwood Mac "When the rain washes you clean you'll know..."
5. Use a sample from ELO's One Summer Dream.
6. Use a sample of Alan Parson's I Robot...This song was written in the 70's about a future where biology and cybernetics would begin to blur, and yet it is so angelic in it's sound...Biology and cybernetics are now the call of the day...so...more closure to the time loop concept...
7. Extend the end of the song out to create a chant like effect at the end
8. Add a heartbeat like quality to the song
9. Close the song with the voice of Paramahansa Yogananda, a great 20th century saint who has brought the ancient science of Kriya Yoga to the masses to help with the planet's current state of evolution to a higher state of consciousness (where the dimension of time becomes a tool rather than a rigid constant.) For more information please visit: www.yogananda-srf.org and http://www.ananda.org/inspiration/books/ay/
I started working on the song and amazingly all the pieces quickly came together. I only had to pitch up or down each sample a bit to even out the tempos and the tuning so it would all sync together. The one sample I had hoped to leave intact was Yogananda's prayer/chant, because as an enlightened saint, the quality of his voice is a blessing in itself. AMAZINGLY his sample was perfectly IN TUNE with everything else without having to alter it in the least. The whole song is slightly out of tune with equal tempered tuning, but yet by pitching it down to 99.9 beats per minute it put everything in tune with Master Yogananda's intonation...now how did I know to do that???? LOL (Thank you Guru...)
I have called all those involved The Sacred Heart Crew... :)
I then doubled all of the vocal parts with my voice, plus I added additional keyboards, percussion and bass. As you can see although the song is highly re-made, the entire soul of the song is still John...
I wanted the music to be the focus of this video, so for the video I have jut put pictures of the covers of some of the main releases by the artists involved, in the hopes that younger listeners will seek out the outstanding music to be found in many these landmark albums. Since I have no commercial releases of my music at this time, I have included samples of some of my YouTube uploads as a solo artist or as collaborator with some other amazing artists.
