Teddy and Berkeley, Newfoundland dogs, do freestyle carting - without leads. The goal is to work at a distance from the handler. Before attempting these exercises they have to feel very comfortable in their harnesses and apparatus; thereafter they work out the turns and twists themselves.
Freestyle carting differs from traditional carting as taught in the UK, where the novice dog is gradually introduced to pulling weights, usually beginning with a log pull. That might be prohibitive for very young dogs for whom it may be inadvisable to pull weights until they have matured. With freestyle carting the initial emphasis is on the turns and manouvres; the handler ensures that the novice dog/puppy does not actually pull the apparatus, not take any weight, but is gradually introduced to manouvres as it builds up confidence and developes spatial awareness. The objective is not to teach how to pull - that can always come later - but to feel confident within the harness and apparatus. In this way complex moves can be taught at an early stage.
Berkeley and Teddy are great David, always enjoy watching your videos.
There's hope for our newfs yet!!!
