FALL 2010 Is it time to take the plunge and put good money down for an outdoor wood furnace? You might want to do a little research first. Take a look at manufacturer's web sites and brochures. There's one thing missing from EVERY photo of their products-- the EMISSIONS. The stuff that comes out that little chimney on the top. Why? Because they wouldn't sell very many outdoor furnaces if they showed you the truth- thick, acrid smelling soot and ash, soot so heavy it tends to blow parallel to the ground, into neighboring homes, even hundreds of feet away like ours is. We sit in a smokey fog day after day, sometimes weeks at a time, with no choice but to inhale a non-stop supply of smoke tainted air. Money saving? Maybe. It's COST us a lot, that's for sure. Headaches, asthma attacks, medications, trips to the doctor, Lots of smokey clothes, smokey pets, air conditioning running in cold weather, we can't use our yard 1/2 the time it's burning, Outdoor exercise in smokey air? It's one of the leading causes of heart attacks. Wood burning may make you feel more independent, but with freedom comes responsibility. From where we live, operating one of these behemoths is not responsible towards other tax paying property owners. When did "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" change to "Screw everyone else all I care about is myself"?
My sentiments exactly. Yes, we are breathing it even in August. He burns to heat his shower water, day and night it smolders then cranks up. He got away with it in Indiana even ater the new regulations have banned this from April 30 - September 30. I am exhausted, very ill and furious.
