My wife doesn't like my beard, but I've found since it grew in, I get alot more attention from other ladies. Even my wife's aunt likes my beard.

If you like your beard, you should not let a women (or anyone else) cause you to shave it off. I bet for as many women who do not like a bearded man there are just as many who do like a bearded man. Why let their whims control us men in any way?

His beard was not taken care of, for a beard to look nice it has to be treated well - trimmed conditioned and even dyed sometimes.
The best way to grow a beard is to let it grow for 3-4 weeks then trim it to a stubble then let it grow for as long as you want it to, this is to make sure that every hair is the same length and the beard is at it's thickest.
