Update: August 2010: SOLD

Just got my 97 Cavalier 2.2L. Changed the oil the other day with Valvoline Maxlife 10W-40 (Dealership my grandfather has been taking it to uses Conventional 10W-40) a Purolator PureOne oil filter, a Purolator PremiumPlus Air filter, and a new Valve cover gasket. 126,000 miles almost. After changing the oil and using seafoam in the Vacuum line and gas tank, its been maknig this ticking noise. Anyone able to identify it as Valve tappet or Fuel Injector?

  • Its your timing chain tensioner. Or a bent valve. My cavalier has the same tapping noise. Then my tensioner broke. And now I have a bent valves. Pulling check engine light p0302 witch is a misfire. On bank 2.

  • @merdock656 It was valve tappets, and I haven't even owned this car for a year and a half.

  • belt tensioner? grr idkkk

  • @rgrafton Hydraulic lifter tick. No big deal. Seems to like thinner oil, PP 5W-30 doesn't do it, but the Maxlife 5W-30 (a thicker 5W-30) seems to do it.

  • dude..its a chevy...of course its gonna make a weird noise..they all do....GM junk dude...

  • Wrong. The noise is gone now that I'm running 5W-30, instead of 10W-40. My grandfather also has a 99 Silverado 5.3L, doesn't make any noise. Neither does my grandmothers 2.2L Ecotec Cavalier. In this case, it was simply the wrong weight oil.

  • This is one "coordinated" video. =p

  • I use 5w20 and 5w30, 2 bottles each (4), runs like it wants to, free spirit! Oil starving the lifter making tap instead of lubricate!

  • i think mine has the same issue.. I have 5w30 in it but Ill try penzoil

  • @LazyE303 my whole point exactly stick to recommendation and you will be fine dont use heavier oil than your car calls for use whats in the book i run 5w30 in a 1978 chevy 350 and never had any problems

  • @robbie1674563 5w-30 for better cold starting protection ( cold start can be on a 90F day outside temp it is STILL A COLD START, oil does not properly lubricate an engine until 100C.)

  • @rudolphna54 probably engine tolerance/wear, if you run 40w oil in a vehicle that recommends 30wt, each time you run your engine you have increased oil pressure but decrease oil flow ( too thick to lubricate as intended ) = wear/noise due to lack of oil. Change to 30wt = increased oil flow rate and possible drop in oil pressure ( doesn't mean unsafe drop just a slight possible drop ) but the increase in oil to lifters = better/more lubrication. Just a guess.

  • dude 10w40 is for gm truck those cars use 5-30 cause it gives it better start up protection and gms arnt junk no american car is but those dumbass ford lovers always talk shit and we gm guys respect
