@Super8Thing Thanks. Looks like I need to do a few tests. I just acquired a mint 514XL and will have a Canon 1014 XL-S in less than a week. In all my past super8 shooting I never attempted anything with the Macro settings (I had a Nikon R10. Awesome camera).

Questions... At :07 you have the guy at left of frame, out of focus, and the background in focus. Then at :09 it seems to snap to just the background focused. Was that an actual cut in the filming, or did you flip from macro too quickly? At 0:27 you have a terrific racking focus shot. I did not realize any super8 cams were capable of doing a rack focus like that with the macro mode. From :30 to :32 you have a slow, 35mm film-like racking of focus. Was that with the macro mode also? Thanks

@msp1518 All of the snap focus, rack focus, slow rack focus you see in this video was done using macro mode only. No editing. What makes all this focus racks possible is the dual macro mode which can be activated at both the Wide and Tele end of the Zoom.

hello, thanks for the clip. can i ask what setting you need to have the focusing on to have acceptable focus on everything you point the 514xl-s at? i would like to film someone walking towards the camera.many thanks.

To give you an exact answer I'd need the 514's dept of field of table and I don't have that right in front of me, but I can tell you that the rule of thumb for getting depth of focus is to A) Shoot at the widest possible setting on your zoom lens. B) Shoot stopped down at F11 or F16.
