Doris Dean (1889-1981), the English musical comedy singer and dancer and pantomime principal girl, here sings 'Just for To-Night (Gaze into My Eyes and Say you Love Me),' a popular song by Harry, A. Tierney, with words by Worton David, published in 1914. Miss Dean's recording was made for the Regal label in London in 1914. The song was also sung by a number of other celebrities, including Florence Smithson (http://www.nla.gov.au/apps/cdview?pi=nla.mus-an13294452-s1-v) and Phyllis Dare, but neither appears to have made recordings of it.
The recording featured here is from John Culme's Footlight Notes Collection, as are the photographs of Doris Dean, taken by various photographers between about 1906 and 1920.
'Just for To-Night (Gaze into My Eyes and Say you Love Me)' should not be confused with George L. Cobb's song, 'Just for To-Night,' which was also published in 1914. For a Victor recording of the latter by Billy Murray and Will Oakland go to http://www.collectionscanada.ca/obj/m2/f7/12105.mp3 (The Virtual Gramophone site of the Library and Archives, Canada).
