Recorded in 1962, produced by Sonny Bono! An absolute masterpiece of contemporary blues violin.
In 1966 when I found this 45 I was really into Jeff Beck & The Yardbirds;
boy did I get a surprise when I got home and thru this on the old Stereo.
There's Nobody Else like him! Check It Out! He later went on to find fame playing with Frank Zappa, John Mayall & Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee. Also put out a great album with Harvey Mandel.
With his partner Dewey Terry he had a whole slew of hits and minor hits on the Specialty label, as DON & DEWEY.

  • This may be the most beautiful song ever recorded. Unfortunately, this version has a cut at 1.39 that skips over about 15 seconds of music, as well as a premature ending. The cut is seamless enough, but if you listen to the chords you can hear that the whole structure is thrown off as a result. I don't know why anyone would mangle such a perfect song; maybe it was just a skip on the record. Anyway, if this is the only place you're hearing this song, know that you're not getting the real thing.

  • @filboidstudge - Just checked the 45 that I took this from, and lo & behold the 15 seconds is missing on it as well! It's the original 45 on the RUSH label.Do you have this track on a European Compilation CD? The only thing I can think of, is that Sonny Bono did a tape edit to keep it under 3 minutes, hoping to get airplay. I know it's appeared on a compilation in EU. Maybe the original 1/4 trk mix was used for the CD......There is NO SKIP on the 45! (times out at 2:47)

  • Gorgeous! he's right up there with the best, and there are some very good fiddle players.

  • A most spiritual and soulful blues dialog between the violin and the organ...

    The violin taking the lead roll going solo....I just love this, blues solo on electric

    violin, it doesn't get better than that....:-)

  • @filboidstudge Yeah right! It's a shame that if, if only somebody did so in order not everybody to share the whole goodnesss of the song!

  • It was released as a 45 on SUE in the UK back in the 60's.

  • To Nothin66: Don't worry about the John Blake flub!! Thanks for uploading Sugarcane. You know I finally got to see him about ten years ago at an in store performance at the now closed Village Music in Mill Valley, CA. It was Don & Dewey and "guest" musician Ry Cooder!! Maybe 30 people in the store. Don graciously signed his LPs for me including Pure Food & Drug Act ( I'd already gotten Harvey Mandel's autograph another time). I mailed him a copy of it, because he didn't even have it.

  • @joealesi - that was a flub. It was 2am, man! What can I say?

    D.J.

  • DON "SUGER CANE" HARRIS WAS THE GREATEST VIOLIN PLAYER

    RIP

  • You can actually here that fiddle crying!
