When I met James Doohan in Atlanta, Georgia in 1993, he was just as nice as he appears on screen. They wouldn't let him sign one of his pictures that they sold there, yet he signed the back of one of my business cards. Still have it; with the picture that I purchased. I was in the Air Force then. At that convention Michael Dorn was there, as well. That Q&A hour with Mr.Doohan was intriguing. People were asking him things about Star Trek like it was for~real. He said he "likes being Scotty".

Not to piss the bed but if they could activate the hatch and not get pulled inside with hails, why not just hailing until the Enterprise escaped?
