Struggling on that uphill climb? Get your muscles to work as efficiently as possible by exhaling as much carbon dioxide as possible.
When your lungs are completely empty of C02 (Carbon Dioxide), you are able to inhale more air (oxygen) into your lungs.
The oxygen will then be carried from your blood cells to your muscles. An increase in O2 for your working muscle cells will produce more ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) which is a key molecule in the production of energy within your cells).

Try to get into a breathing rhythm, you may want to try a 3 step inhale followed by 1 large exhale.

Try it out and let me know if it works for you.

  • good tip! I'm just getting into mountain biking and am enjoying all your tip!! thank you!

  • @rzadigi, great, stay with mtb'ing, it will get you in great shape and is something you can do your whole life.

  • Nice! Hooverphonics! Good track.

  • @KinhWilliams, its nice to know that others listen to triphop ! Check out Thievery Corporation as well!

  • Any more advice on climbing hills? I have trouble with the quick downhill descent followed by an immediate uphill haul. Mainly I am having trouble with my gear shifting.

  • @cabmak4life78, get as much speed as you can on the downhill and keep the momentum going by peddling uphill. Up shift when you start feeling tension on the chain all the way to the 32/34 cog in the back. I usually stay with the middle chainring on the front. Typical is a 32 tooth. Pace yourself as you do not want to burn out your legs early in the ride, especially if your over 40!

  • @TheStailfish, actually most people just breath hard while climbing. They don't focus on the exhale donkey.

  • "exhale as much as you can and then inhale as much as you can" DUUUUH

    ok "learned something new"

  • Hey Das, let me know if it works out for ya. I use it on my uphill climbs.

  • I picked up an old vintage 10-speed road bike in great shape for very little money and ride from 10 to 60 miles round trip. I'm sure this breathing method will really help climbing steep paved roads.
