It needs to have selective fire and the capability of firing more than one round at a time. A M-16 though not firing full automatic meets the criteria because it can fire a three round burst. But for simplicities sake, to be an assault rifle, by the proper definition, it needs to be fully automatic.
However, I would like to hear how you define an assault rifle. I am curious about the extent of your ignorance about firearms.
