25 May 2008, 1 mile outside Bison, Kansas. Tornado is to our SSW.
This tornado was unique because it extended from the rear flank downdraft of the supercell instead of its massive wall cloud, where we were obviously expecting it to come from. Pay attention to the bottom-lefthand corner of the screen.

Video taken while on a convective field study with Valparaiso University's meteorology department.

  • "We gotta leave!" What??? Your like over a mile away dude! Your so safe it's unbelievable.

  • @freehealjobs1 Yes, in retrospect you are right. It was my first tornado and I overreacted. Never wanted to be one of those people.. whoops!

  • I'm going to show this to my advisor. The meso on that storm had to have been huge for the anticyclonic member to touchdown. Good job! Awesome

  • I'm pretty sure this isn't rotating anticyclonically, but either way, what an incredible formation nonetheless...

  • @MRAndersonSilva27 RFD is Rear Flank Downdraft. Its Basically the winds that are wrapping around the backside of the mesocyclone. Im pretty sure that's what they are but not entirely I'm only a High School student so my knowledge is not that great. Its usually indicated by an "Hook echo" on reflectivity if you've ever seen that before

  • @triberocker I know what I am talking about to I was first hand in the Joplin tornado and chased. And I only watched have the video and left it and wrote the coment. I then finished it later it found out it was a true tornado and I corected my self. Anyway nice rope tornado. Joplin was a High Precip supercell so it was hard to see!
