My response would be:

It's appalling but not surprising that the forces of religious intolerance would take one sentence out of a 40 minute speech to the gay community and distort it to their own ends. But this is what they've been doing - ignoring the truth and spreading lies - for the last half-century.

Is HIV a "gay disease"? Of course not - no community owns a virus. As everyone knows, worldwide heterosexual sex is overwhelmingly responsible for the spread of the HIV virus. Here in the U.S., however, it is a disease that disproportionately impacts gay and bisexual men, particularly men of color. After giving some of the statistics, I said,

"The response — internal to our community and external — is appallingly racist. Internally, when these numbers come out, the "established" gay community seems to have a collective shrug as if this isn't our problem. Folks, with 70 percent of the people in this country living with HIV being gay or bi, we cannot deny that HIV is a gay disease. We have to own that and face up to that."

I used strong words to talk to our own community about this appalling situation, period.
