Democracy is the Right to Dissent: Americans talk about the importance and value of protest in bringing about examination of policies and positive change. Dr. Ralph Young, Professor of History at Temple University, explains that dissent gave birth to the United States and that freedom of speech is a critical mechanism of democracy and therefore guaranteed in the First Amendment to the Constitution.
"Having the ability to speak out against my government is something that other people all over the world don't get to exercise." I think this shows that people still pitifully think that America is great because we have freedom (and dissent) and that it's the only place you can have it. What about the europen countries? They have freedom of speech just like us. They tend to dissent a lot better too.
