Nice video, but even this doesn't fully capture the drama of that race. An important thing left out: Smith, with a huge lead, suddenly clutching his hamstring. And then doing it again and again. You could cut the tension with a knife as you watched Dixon closing in. It was like watching a lion approach a wounded gazelle.

Wonderful video..."You have to run your plan, not somebody else's," is such wisdom for a runner at any level. I'm surprised how many top runners at the time were unaware of the concept of running tangents. Dick Beardsley talked about running the first half of his course record at Grandma's Marathon in the middle of the road, until his competitor Garry Bjorklund reminded him how course distances are certified.

    Ooh-Rah!!

Quite often doing something the SMART way will pay off. Counting the corners as he was running is just pure genious, considering that it seems those ahead of him DIDN'T consider doing that.

Agree 100 percent! I remember watching this race in New Zealand just before I had to go to school. And it was soooo exciting as Rod started closing the gap minute by minute as Smith started cramping up. And I was so proud of Rod Dixon getting that win for NZ.

Pity that Rod Dixon ran poorly at the 1984 Olympics Marathon at LA. I had high hopes on him bu was disappointed. Same with the very strong group of NZ women marathon runners in Lorraine Moller, Ann Audain and Mary O'Connor. Ann Audain dropped out, O'Connor ran poorly. Only Lorraine Moller ran credibly. Allison Roe missed out totally.

    Anyone got the whole race?

Would love to Smith catch and drop Shahanga who went out like crazy only to get caught by Dixon. Would also like to see John Graham's race who went onto finish 5th.
